Landslides in Urquiza Park: The Use of PET Fibers to Avoid the Movement of Hillsides
(2023-10-27) Londero, Bautista; Lopez, David José
Summary—Urquiza Park is an important green area of the city of Paraná. Currently, it is facing a critical issue related to landslides and erosion. The causes are mainly heavy rains and trees removal, destroying the environment and putting people at risk. The purpose of this project is to address the issue of landslides within the specific area of Urquiza Park. To fulfill this aim, a solution that can be implemented by future civil engineers will be explored and explained, involving the reuse of recycled PET fibers to prevent landslides and erosion of this area. In order to achieve the goal of this work, it is organized as follows. Firstly, the city of Paraná will be briefly described. Then, the Urquiza Park landslides problem will be presented and discussed. Next, some scenes will be described in order to help visualize the problematic situation. Later, the causes as well as the consequences of the problem will be identified and analysed. After this, the solution to address the problem will be discussed. Finally, the strengths and weaknesses of the proposal will be stated. The expected impact of this project is mainly to improve the quality of life and safety of people as well as to preserve an important landmark of Paraná like Urquiza Park. In addition, it contributes to raising social awareness regarding PET recycling.

Sustainable Cement Manufacturing: Carbon Injection into Soils to Reduce Footprint
(2024-10) Finis, Nicolás; Londero, Bautista; López, David
The increasing production in cement manufacturing industries results in combustion that emits high levels of carbon dioxide, which is the primary greenhouse gas responsible for climate change. This paper addresses the escalating environmental challenges generated by these industries, particularly its significant contribution to global carbon emissions, which account for approximately 8% of the world's total CO2 production. This problem is mainly related to two Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. These are number 9 and number 11, which aim to modernize industries and reduce the environmental impact of urbanization. Given the industry's reliance on solid fuels and its impact on climate change, this paper explores sustainable methodologies to mitigate these effects, focusing on the innovative technique of soil carbon injection. This method requires capturing CO2 from cement production and injecting into the soil. The paper is structured to first explain the sources and impacts of CO2 emissions in cement production, followed by an analysis of CO2 capture and soil injection techniques, and an evaluation of the project's viability and benefits. This paper is expected to contribute to raising awareness towards a low carbon future of cement industry and what it represents in terms of pollution, in the context of the Net Zero Emissions by 2050.
