Abstract
This work is part of an investigation developed in order to characterize, for structural use, the ponderosa pine wood from forests implanted in the Andean zone of Northern Patagonia in Argentina. In 2002 Argentina started with visual classification standards but the trend in the world is to move towards a mechanical classification. The objective of this article is to present the comparison between mechanical classification and resistant visual classification models. The experimental program included 454 test corps from 6 different squads. The tests were carried out according to the UNE-EN: 408 (2012)1 standard. Five models were designed for mechanical classification. For visual classification, a previously published method was used on the basis of the knots and the dimensions of the growth rings. The mechanical classification presented 92.7% and 98.8% of correct answers in the superior and inferior qualities respectively, with yields of 18% and 36%. The visual classification showed higher yields, but with a high percentage of overestimations, 64% and 57% in the superior and inferior qualities respectively. It is concluded that with the mechanical classification the structural quality of each piece is more accurately predicted.
