A series of experimental activities designed to enhance active learning in electronics engineering is presented. The activities include experiments focusing on Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) devices and microcontroller boards subjected to radiation in harsh environments, such as those found in outer space, nuclear facilities, particle accelerators, oil well logging wireline, and nuclear medicine applications. Conducted in shifts over a two-week period at the RA-1 reactor hall, these experiments utilized an Am-Be source to deliver a total dose approximately equivalent to the one encountered during a space-borne mission. Monitoring and measurements of the devices under irradiation were conducted in real-time, allowing for immediate data collection and analysis. Post-irradiation, quick analyses were performed, and findings were presented in a dedicated Workshop, fostering an interactive learning experience for students. Feedback from all actors was overwhelmingly positive since everyone become learners. There was also significant engagement from professors of other institutions afterward. This work demonstrates the versatility of the irradiation setup, the effectiveness of a mixed implementation of competency-based education, and lays the foundation for future experiments focused on both academic activities and professional research related to the radiation effects on electronics.
