The DLC (“Diamond Like Carbon”) is a kind of carbon based coating which has good anti-friction properties and corrosion resistance. For this reason, it is used to improve these surface properties on different pieces of industrial use. However, DLC coatings present adhesion problems when they are deposited on metallic substrates. In this work, it was studied the mechanical behavior and adhesion of two DLC coatings, the so-called Soft and Hard, deposited on nitrided AISI 420 stainless steel (duplex sample) and without nitriding (coated sample). The coatings were characterized by Raman. The hardness on the surface was measured with nanoindenter. The microstructure of nitrided layer and the coatings were analysed by OM and SEM. Pin on disk tests were carried out with two counterparts, alumina and steel. The adhesion was evaluated by Indentation Rockwell C with 10 kg, 20 kg and 30 kg. Corrosion behavior was evaluated by the Salt Spray Fog Test according to ASTMB117. The DLC soft coatings had high hydrogen content and their thickness was 30 µm. Their Young Modulus was low, as well as their hardness of about 600 HV. The DLC hard coatings have low hydrogen content and their thickness was about 3 µm. Their hardness is 2000 HV and they have high Young Modulus. Indentation tests showed that the nitrided layer improved the adhesion of both kinds of films. Comparing them, the Soft DLC had better adhesion than the Hard one. The friction coefficient was 0.1 for hard DLC coatings and 0.07 for soft DLC coatings. This value is lower than in the nitrided and untreated steel.

The objective of this work is to compare the wear, friction, adhesion and corrosion behaviour of commercial TiN and DLC coatings deposited on AISI 420 stainless steel.
