Imprints in dry conditions were characterized by small thin cracksformingacircumferenceatthemaximumradiioftheimprint.Thedamagedcoatingwastotallypresentin thefinalimprintofthedrytest.Wetindentationsshowcaseanareaintheimprintwherethe α-Al2O3 layerhas beenremovedthroughoutaringbutwaskeptatthecenteroftheindentation,suggestingthatthecoatingdamageundercyclingcontactloadinwetconditionsisdominatedbyα-Al2O3degradation,associatedwithafretting effectortangentialloadsacceleratingthefatigue-corrosionofthealuminalayer.
