Abstract
The IRAM 9660-1/2 standards, published in 2006, establish requirements of manufacturing and testing for structural glued laminated timber in Argentina. They include three species grown in the country (Araucaria angustifolia, Eucalyptus grandis, Pinus taeda/elliottii) and provide the characteristic values of mechanical properties for two strength classes. Currently these standards are on review to incorporate two clones of Populus deltoides: 'Australiano129/60' and 'Stoneville 67', grown in the delta of the Parana River. After investigating the mechanical behavior of boards and finger joints, from whose results the properties of glued laminated timber were analytically derived, an experimental program was carried out according to the criteria of European standards, which allowed to verify the projected values experimentally. The program included bending tests according to EN 408 (2010) of 103 beams of structural size, grouped in two representative samples of the two quality grades adopted. The characteristic value of bending strength reached 20,8N/mm2 for grade 1 and 18,4N/mm2 for grade 2, while elasticity modulus showed mean values of 10700N/mm2 and 10100N/mm2 , which are consistent with those analytically derived from the behavior of boards and finger joints. These results are in order with the ones adopted by IRAM 9660-1 (2006) for the species currently included, which encourages further studies to consolidate the knowledge of this structural material.
