Item A Postcolonial analysis in “Purple Hibiscus” by Chimamanda: How do fixity and Identity mold characters’ development?(2023-10) Florentin, Ariana; Mucci, María RosaThis study attempts to elaborate upon the use of concepts such as “identity” and “fixity” in one of Chimamanda’s most enlightening works, her very well-known novel Purple Hibiscus. The aim of this research is to outline the relevance these concepts have in people’s understanding of current reality and provide clear evidence to acknowledge the impact that Postcolonial theory has on literature. Postcolonialism has been debated since the concepts of masters and slaves changed the way humans used to coexist. The research also provides insights and strategies that tackle issues connected to culture, social relationships, power and identity, among others. The study investigates the way in which the majority of characters in Purple Hibiscus struggle with their own identities and are affected by the concept of fixity.Item Unveiling monolingualism Issues in sense8 series(2023-08) Lafuente, Mariana Vanina; Mucci, María RosaThe spread and influence of the English language all over the world is a topic of current debate, especially when this may represent a danger for the survival of cultural customs and/ or local languages. In this context, the study of the different ways in which a language can assume the role of a lingua franca, as well as the consequences that this situation may lead to, constitute an enlightening matter of analysis. The use of English as an exclusive language in the Hollywood film productions exemplifies the ideas previously mentioned and demands careful thought and consideration. Even though some research on the topic has been conducted, the peculiarities of the TV series selected for the study propose a new perspective for thorough enquiry. The purpose of this investigation is to examine the extent to which the use of English as a monolanguage in the TV series Sense8 opposes the human values fostered by the show. Also, the analysis of some strategies used in Hollywood films will be performed to confirm or deny that the use of English can be included into these strategies and does not represent any danger for the ideals promoted in the TV series. In order to demonstrate the concepts aforementioned, qualitative content analysis will be carried out, since the examination of three episodes of the TV series and the literature related to this topic will constitute the corpus of analysis. The present research suggests that even though the exclusive use of the English language is a resource frequently applied in Hollywood industry, it influences and challenges the promotion of the human principles the show encourages.Item Changes in heteronormativity of the topic "Family" in the series (new) english file -Intermediate level-(2023-05-20) Di Pietro, Paula Anabel; Mucci, María RosaHeterosexuality is the only sexual orientation widely accepted in Western society while all other sexualities are generally excluded. A heteronormative community is made up of heterosexual marriage, sexual orientation with reproductive purposes and the perpetuation of heteronormative roles and stereotypes. These ideas seem to be replicated and reinforced not only in the media or advertisements, but also in the educational system, more specifically in EFL textbooks. The present work proposes to analyse the changes in heteronormativity in the units devoted to the topic of “Family” in the series (New) English File of intermediate level in its four editions (1996, 2003, 2013 and 2018). For such purpose, a qualitative research is carried out to examine the pictures and images in the light of the Barthesian myth and the texts by applying the metadiscourse theory by Hyland. Results have shown that these texts and pictures still contribute to the reproduction of the heteronormative model.Item American and British TV series as a means of input for the ESL learner(2023-09-01) Pañoni, Daniela Paula; Castiñeira, BeatrizWatching TV series in English is a very popular leisure activity for EFL learners. So, to what extent does this activity contribute tothe student’s natural acquisition of the language? This study aims to find out the range ofeffectiveness of TV shows as a source of input for the English learner, through an investigationcarried out in a private English Institute, in which intermediate and upper-intermediatestudents’ productions were analyzed in search of informal language expressions. Yet, he is hardly ever thought as the detective who solves the cases, up to now. This idea has motivated this work, and the aim of this study is to confirm whether the character of John Watson fulfils the role of detective in the episode “The Hounds of Baskerville” from the television adaption Sherlock. This thesis has an introduction in which the emphasis is placed on the problem statement, the research question, and its hypotheses. Subsequently, it is divided into three chapters. In the first chapter, the theoretical framework of the analysis is presented, particularly Todorov´s typology of detective fiction and his concept of the fantastic; the literary narratology proposed by Mieke Bal and Propp’s ideas presented in his work Morphology of the Folktale. The second section is focused on the author, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and his relation to his own work. In this regard, this second part is devoted to the scrutiny of the original version of the novel The Hound of the Baskervilles and its modern version- “The Hounds of Baskerville”- written by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, which is the episode chosen to prove the hypotheses of this work. Chapter three is dedicated to the study of the characterization of John Watson and his new role in the contemporary series aforementioned. Finally, this investigation reveals a new way of (re) configuring the character of John Watson.Item Vonnegut´s model applied to the digital creation of teaching materials(2023-09-01) Mascaro, Camila; Mucci, María RosaThis paper examines the role of teachers moving from consumers to producers of texts for teaching purposes. It works on the importance of analysing the narrative discourse from a post-structuralist and postmodern perspective, following Kurt Vonnegut’s model “shape of stories”. It deals with the integration of ICTs as a tool for creative and critical production, as well. By supplying teachers at the teacher training college an insight and an alternative perspective on narrative analysis, this study demonstrates the quality of analysis in higher education is relatively limited. By the same token, it reveals students find it useful to incorporate ICTs to produce texts. It shows how, due to globalization, multiliteracies represent a vital concept to bear in mind in education. In this way, they were aware of the diverse types of literacies and how they interrelate all together. Consequently, they acknowledge the value of adopting and adapting contents according to the contexts they work in.Item The Hero’s Journey in Arya Stark(2023-02-27) Vega, Ana Débora; Mucci, María RosaThe aim of this work is to analyse the extent to which the female character Arya Stark in Game of Thrones follows the stages proposed by Joseph Campbell to be considered a heroine. Therefore, we explore the different movements of the path followed by this character throughout the development of the story. We consider the order of the stages to prove whether the Initiation stage gives Arya the wisdom needed for her transformation and we also explore her heroic traits in the way she risks her life for a cause that goes beyond her own existence. As a result, a content study has been carried out by means of the observation of two episodes from the series, concentrating on the aspects that are central to prove our hypotheses.Item Women´s Power and Patriarchy: A Literary Case Study in William Henry Hudson´s Work(2021-09) Biocca, Analía Verónica; Mucci, María RosaThe representation of female characters in male-authored literary texts constitutes a central point in feminist criticism (Manly, 2007: 46-50; Goldman, 2007: 74). Especially in the Victorian period, women´s quest for power appears as an unusual topic on account of the patriarchal order prevailing in the society of the time. The Anglo- Argentinian author William Henry Hudson was a prolific writer during this historical context; however, the power relationships that come into play in his fictional works have been overlooked until now. Hence, this study analyses the short story Pelino Viera´s Confession with a special focus on its female character, Rosaura, and her search for self-empowerment under patriarchal constraints. For this purpose, a content analysis research method was followed, applying a deconstructive feminist approach in order to dismantle the power relationships existing in the story. The findings from this study highlight the importance of challenging the culturally-determined stereotypes present in literary works so as to perceive the inequalities and power struggles between men and women, and also lead to interesting implications for a feminist debate both in the classroom and in society.Item Coloniality of Power and a New Perspective on EFL Textbooks in Argentina(2023-05-20) Laffué, María Belén; Mucci, María RosaEven though colonial times seem to belong to some past centuries, today the process of coloniality still affects and permeates many people's lives. Considering that textbooks are instruments of change and leave what Eduardo Gruner calls “huellas”, analysing textbooks from a coloniality perspective appears to be imperative in this capitalist world. For this reason, this qualitative research work inquires about the extent to which Coloniality of Power is present in two EFL textbooks used in Buenos Aires Province: Phases 3 (Macmillan 2018) and Insight Pre-Intermediate level (Oxford 2018). The results show that EFL textbooks reproduce and perpetuate in different ways colonial practices through the written discourse.
