    Turning Waste into Solutions: Waste to Energy Plant as a Key to Mitigate Soil and Air Pollution

    Summary— Nowadays, the city of Parana faces a series of challenges which have not been addressed effectively. Among them, one of the problems is soil and air pollution, mainly caused by the wrong management and organization of garbage dumps in the city. This can cause health and hygiene problems for the neighbourhood residents near the Parana garbage dump. The main purpose of this project is to address the problem related to soil and air pollution in the neighbourhood near the Paraná garbage dump. A possible solution to this problem is the construction of a waste-to-energy plant.

    Road Deterioration on Delfin Huergo Street, in Paraná: Ecological Pavement and Implementation of Parking Lots

    Summary— This presentation is based in Paraná, which is the capital city of the province of Entre Ríos, the largest and most populated city in the province. The city is characterized by its streets with abundant traffic. Due to this traffic, the streets of this city deteriorate very easily. The purpose of this work is to describe and address the problem of road deterioration on Delfín Huergo Street, which is located next to the premises of the National Technological University, Paraná Regional School of Engineering. The use of ecological pavement and the implementation of parking lots on this street as a solution are also analyzed. To achieve this purpose, this work follows this order. First, the problem is contextualized and then addressed, as well as its causes and consequences are highlighted. Secondly, a solution to the problem will be addressed and its strengths and weaknesses will also be raised.

    Pollution of the Paraná River: Sanitizing and Systematizing the Colorado Creek

    Summary— The project addresses the problem of pollution of the Colorado Creek in the city of Paraná, Entre Ríos, Argentina. The creek is not taken care of, which is causing damage to the environment. This pollution harms animals and the people living nearby. The main causes are weak environmental laws and lack of public awareness of the impact of pollution. The consequences include the loss of species, the spread of diseases due to contact with polluted water, and negative economic effects that affect both tourism and local development. The project proposes a plan to clean up and systematize the creek, with the implementation of filtration systems to improve water quality and reduce flood risks, which is expected to have a positive impact on the city and the environment in the long term. This project is expected to contribute to the analysis of measures to solve the problem of creek contamination.

    Urban Flood Resilience: Underground Vaults and Piping Systems in Parana, Entre Rios

    Summary— The following work focuses on the problem of floods in the city of Parana, which is the capital of Entre Ríos, located in the north-east of Argentina. The city's climate is humid and warm and with periods of rain distributed throughout the year. The city is constantly expanding, but often this is not accompanied by planning. The purpose of this work is to address the problem of floods on Almafuerte avenue in Paraná. It also describes and analyses the possibility of implementing underground vaults and piping systems to avoid future floods and improve its resilience. To achieve this purpose, this project is organized as follows. First, the city of Paraná is going to be briefly described. Next, the problem on Almafuerte avenue is going to presented. Following the analysis, some scenes are going to be described to visualize the problem. After that, the causes and consequences of the problem are going to be identified and analysed. Finally, the way forward to solve the problem is going to be discussed. Lastly, the strengths and weaknesses of the proposal are going to be presented. The expected outcome of this project is primarily to improve the quality of life of the local people. Additionally, it aims to promote sustainable actions to reduce the carbon footprint and impact in the ecosystem.

    Inefficient Interurban Connection: Modernisation of the Paso Bravo Bridge

    Summary: The Paso Bravo bridge located in Feliciano Atencio, Entre Ríos, suffers from poor maintenance and obsolete infrastructure, causing safety risks and traffic congestion. This project proposes modernizing the bridge using recycled materials like high-density polyethylene and polystyrene, inspired by the Easter Dawyck Bridge in Scotland. Despite initial costs, the solution offers long-term benefits such as reduced maintenance, lower emissions, and improved traffic flow, enhancing safety and fostering economic development in the region. The expected impact of this project is mainly to analyse a way to improve the quality of life and safety of people while preserving the environment.

    Energy Waste of Standby Consumption in Off-Peak Hours: Harnessing Green Hydrogen from Electricity in the Industrial Park in Paraná

    Summary— This project is based in the city of Paraná, which is the capital of Entre Rios province. It focuses on the General Belgrano Industrial Park, which is an important source of jobs for the population of Paraná. This industrial park faces a significant challenge during off-peak hours when industrial operations halt and electricity consumption is minimal. This is because the industrial sector's need for continuous 24/7 electricity, even during non-working hours, lead to standby power consumption. The purpose of this work is to address the problem of energy optimization in off-peak hours. It also describes and analyzes a solution by means of harnessing green hydrogen to store electricity. To achieve this purpose, firstly, this project is going to describe General Belgrano Industrial Park, the area where the problem is located. Secondly, it is going to present the problem of standby consumption and energy waste in the industry sector along with photos that help picture this issue. Thirdly, this project is going to identify the factors that give rise to the problem, and the consequences that derive from it. Lastly, this work is going to state a solution based on the use of hydrogen batteries and the process of electrolysis, as well as its strengths and weaknesses. This project is expected to contribute to the analysis of engineering solutions to energy waste of standby consumption in off-peak hours in the industry.

    Dengue Prediction in Paraná: An AI-Driven Approach to Combat Dengue

    Summary— Paraná, the provincial capital, presents challenges to act against dengue fever. These challenges entail stagnant water sources that become breeding grounds and pose health risks to the residents. However, the main challenge lies in the lack of an effective system to help authorities act against this pest. The aim of this project is to analyse how AI could be a tool to use against dengue and show the strengths and weaknesses this project could have. In order to fulfill this purpose, this work is organized as follows. Firstly, the Paraná Department is going to be contextualized; as well as this, the problem that represents the dengue fever is going to be described. Then, the causes and consequences of this problem are going to be analysed. Next, an approach to the problem is going to be described, followed by the strengths and weaknesses of the project. This work is expected to contribute to the analysis of AI solutions to current health challenges.

    Excessive Energy Consumption in Pool Heating Systems: Optimization Using Solar-Powered Piping

    Summary— Viale is a small town located 57 kilometres to the east of Paraná, Entre Ríos. The problem this work addresses is the inefficiency in heating Viale’s sport center pool. The system to heat the pool water has a high monetary cost due to the large amount of gas used, which also causes air pollution. The purpose of this work is to address the problem of the excessive energy consumption in pool heating systems. It also describes and analyses a solution by means of a piping system that operates with solar energy. To achieve this aim, this work is organized as follows. First, the city of Viale is going to be described. Next, the problem of excessive energy consumption in pool heating systems is going to be described. Then, the causes and consequences are going to be analysed. After this, a discussion on solutions to address the problem is going to be take place. Finally, the strengths and weaknesses of the proposal are going to be presented. This project is expected to contribute to the analysis of sustainable solutions to heating systems.

    Accumulated Garbage in the City of Parana: Analysis of the Implementation of a Material Recycling Facility (MRF)

    Summary— Paraná is the capital city of the province of Entre Ríos. It has a large population and is continuously growing, resulting in a very high population density. Therefore, it faces significant pollution issues due to the accumulation of garbage in various parts of the city. Improperly managed waste accumulates in different areas, causing pollution, blockages, and other problems that directly impact the living beings in the vicinity. The aim of this project is to analyze the implementation of recycling facilities with MRF technology to address the problems stemming from this waste accumulation while also maximizing resource utilization. The primary objective is to raise awareness about the garbage-related issues in our surroundings and find efficient solutions for them. Resumen— Paraná es la ciudad capital de la provincia de Entre Ríos, cuenta con una gran cantidad de habitantes y está en constante crecimiento, por lo tanto, la densidad de población es muy alta. Esto lleva a que sea una ciudad con un alto grado de contaminación por acumulación de basura en los distintos puntos de esta. La basura que no es tratada como corresponde se acumula en los distintos sectores de la ciudad generando contaminación, atascamientos y demás problemas que afectan de lleno a los seres vivos a su alrededor. El propósito de este proyecto es analizar la implementación de una planta de reciclaje con tecnología MRF para solucionar los problemas que genera esta basura y a su vez aprovechar al máximo los recursos. El objetivo principal es dar a conocer los problemas que tenemos a nuestro alrededor por culpa de la basura y poder corregirlos de una manera eficiente.

    Circulation of Emergency Vehicles: Installation of Smart Traffic Lights on Avenues

    Summary: In the city of Paraná, Entre Ríos, there is an inefficient circulation of emergency vehicles, mainly on the avenues. This is due to the lack of good planning and coordination between emergency services and traffic authorities, the lack of public awareness of the need to yield to emergency vehicles and the state of the streets. This project consists in the analysis of the implementation of smart traffic lights on major avenues. These smart traffic lights can detect and give priority to emergency vehicles, which could significantly reduce response times. Although there are implementation and maintenance costs, the benefits make up for the investment. This solution aims to improve the safety and efficiency of emergency vehicle circulation in Paraná. Resumen: En la ciudad de Paraná, Entre Ríos, existe una ineficiente circulación de vehículos de emergencia, principalmente en las avenidas. Esto se debe a la falta de una buena planificación y coordinación entre los servicios de emergencia y las autoridades de tránsito, a la falta de conciencia ciudadana sobre la necesidad de ceder el paso a los vehículos de emergencia y al estado de las calles. Este proyecto analiza la implementación de semáforos inteligentes en las grandes avenidas. Estos semáforos pueden detectar y dar prioridad a los vehículos de emergencia, lo que podría reducir significativamente los tiempos de respuesta. A pesar de los costos de implementación y mantenimiento, los beneficios compensan con creces la inversión. Esta solución pretende mejorar la seguridad y la eficiencia de la circulación de vehículos de emergencia en Paraná.
