Sustainable Cement Manufacturing: Carbon Injection into Soils to Reduce Footprint
(2024-10) Finis, Nicolás; Londero, Bautista; López, David
The increasing production in cement manufacturing industries results in combustion that emits high levels of carbon dioxide, which is the primary greenhouse gas responsible for climate change. This paper addresses the escalating environmental challenges generated by these industries, particularly its significant contribution to global carbon emissions, which account for approximately 8% of the world's total CO2 production. This problem is mainly related to two Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. These are number 9 and number 11, which aim to modernize industries and reduce the environmental impact of urbanization. Given the industry's reliance on solid fuels and its impact on climate change, this paper explores sustainable methodologies to mitigate these effects, focusing on the innovative technique of soil carbon injection. This method requires capturing CO2 from cement production and injecting into the soil. The paper is structured to first explain the sources and impacts of CO2 emissions in cement production, followed by an analysis of CO2 capture and soil injection techniques, and an evaluation of the project's viability and benefits. This paper is expected to contribute to raising awareness towards a low carbon future of cement industry and what it represents in terms of pollution, in the context of the Net Zero Emissions by 2050.

Environmental Impact of Textile Waste: Implementing A Biodegradable Material for Sustainable Fashion
    (2024-10) Guiglioni, Lautaro; Penon, Marcos
Abstract: One of the most important and polluting sectors in the present world is the textile industry. This industry has contributed enormously to environmental deterioration and extreme consumerism in recent times. Moreover, the textile industry significantly impacts the environment due to extensive water consumption, chemical pollution, and the generation of non-biodegradable waste. Therefore, addressing these environmental challenges requires exploring sustainable alternatives. To address this, this paper examines the potential of a biodegradable material such as that created by cellulose bacteria (BC) to reduce the environmental footprint of textile production, promoting a circular economy. The aim of this project is to demonstrate the feasibility and advantages of incorporating a biodegradable material into textile manufacturing. In line with this goal, this paper is structured as follows: it first describes the environmental problems associated with conventional textile practices. Then, a biodegradable material as already said, the one created from cellulose bacteria and its applications in textiles are reviewed. Also, case studies of successful implementations are presented, followed by recommendations for integrating this material into conventional textile manufacturing. After this, the viability of this approach is considered. In the final section, strengths and weaknesses of this project are analyzed in detail. Ultimately, the focus on the proposed innovative bacterial cellulose material and improved clothing production and consumption is expected to highlight the important environmental benefits of adopting a biodegradable material, reducing waste and pollution in the textile industry and promoting sustainability and innovation.
