This paper addresses the escalating environmental challenges generated by these industries, particularly its significant contribution to global carbon emissions, which account for approximately 8% of the world's total CO2 production. This problem is mainly related to two Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. These are number 9 and number 11, which aim to modernize industries and reduce the environmental impact of urbanization. Given the industry's reliance on solid fuels and its impact on climate change, this paper explores sustainable methodologies to mitigate these effects, focusing on the innovative technique of soil carbon injection. This method requires capturing CO2 from cement production and injecting into the soil. The paper is structured to first explain the sources and impacts of CO2 emissions in cement production, followed by an analysis of CO2 capture and soil injection techniques, and an evaluation of the project's viability and benefits. This paper is expected to contribute to raising awareness towards a low carbon future of cement industry and what it represents in terms of pollution, in the context of the Net Zero Emissions by 2050.Item Turning Waste into Solutions: Waste to Energy Plant as a Key to Mitigate Soil and Air Pollution(2024-05) Balcar, RómuloSummary— Nowadays, the city of Parana faces a series of challenges which have not been addressed effectively. Among them, one of the problems is soil and air pollution, mainly caused by the wrong management and organization of garbage dumps in the city. This can cause health and hygiene problems for the neighbourhood residents near the Parana garbage dump. The main purpose of this project is to address the problem related to soil and air pollution in the neighbourhood near the Paraná garbage dump. A possible solution to this problem is the construction of a waste-to-energy plant.Item Renewable Electric Energy Generation in Argentina: Solar Thermal Pavement as a Clean and Affordable Alternative(2024-10) Cafaro, Alejandro; Penchansky, AlejoArgentina has an area of 2.8 million square kilometers and an extensive network of paved roads and streets, with 640,000 kilometers in total. With this vast infrastructure, the country has the potential to advance technologies that take advantage of its available space, particularly in renewable energy sources such as solar thermal power. This project aims to explore a method of capturing solar thermal radiation through smart pavements, which accumulate heat in the asphalt and convert it into electrical energy. The purpose of this paper is to analyze a system that could position Argentina as a leader in clean and affordable energy, contributing to reducing dependence on non-renewable sources and promoting environmental sustainability. The study addresses the current energy problem in Argentina, compares it with other countries and presents the methodology of solar thermal pavement, evaluating the benefits and challenges of its application on national routes. This industry has contributed enormously to environmental deterioration and extreme consumerism in recent times. Moreover, the textile industry significantly impacts the environment due to extensive water consumption, chemical pollution, and the generation of non-biodegradable waste. Therefore, addressing these environmental challenges requires exploring sustainable alternatives. To address this, this paper examines the potential of a biodegradable material such as that created by cellulose bacteria (BC) to reduce the environmental footprint of textile production, promoting a circular economy. The aim of this project is to demonstrate the feasibility and advantages of incorporating a biodegradable material into textile manufacturing. In line with this goal, this paper is structured as follows: it first describes the environmental problems associated with conventional textile practices. Then, a biodegradable material as already said, the one created from cellulose bacteria and its applications in textiles are reviewed. Also, case studies of successful implementations are presented, followed by recommendations for integrating this material into conventional textile manufacturing. After this, the viability of this approach is considered. In the final section, strengths and weaknesses of this project are analyzed in detail. Ultimately, the focus on the proposed innovative bacterial cellulose material and improved clothing production and consumption is expected to highlight the important environmental benefits of adopting a biodegradable material, reducing waste and pollution in the textile industry and promoting sustainability and innovation.Item Structural Health Monitoring of Bridges: Use of Smart Sensors for Data Tracking(2024-10) Bogarin-Salinas, Brenda; Stivanello, JuliánAbstract: The number of accidents that occur in the world in terms of civil structures, specifically bridges, is substantially rising.
