Abstract
Kraft lignins are alternatives for phenol replacement in the synthesis of phenol-formaldehyde resins. In this work, the synthesis of a phenolic resin replacing 30% of phenol by eucalyptus Kraft lignin and its application in the impregnation of Kraft papers for the production of high pressure decorative laminates is studied. The synthesis involves two stages. The first stage of lignin hydroxymethylation adopting previously optimized conditions and the second stage of condensation with phenol. For the condensation optimization, the effect of temperature, reaction time and the alcohol used as diluent on the resin viscosity and on the final properties of the laminates was evaluated. The optimum values were obtained for the resin synthesized at 80 °C and pH 8-9 for a period of 50 min with 19% alcohol.
