Abstract
The cotton processing stage presents challenges related to the generation of large volumes of waste during the ginning phase. Therefore, it is proposed to valorize these residues by utilizing them to manufacture particleboards bonded with ureaformaldehyde resin, intended for construction and furniture. Single-layer boards formed by fine and coarse particle sizes, with a resin content of 15.1%, molding pressure of 3.75 MPa, and the addition of hydrophobic agents: paraffin emulsion and Cationic Alkyl Ketene Dimer (AKD) Emulsion, were evaluated. The density, flexural strength, swelling and absorption of the samples, saturated for 2 and 24 hours, were assessed. All boards exceeded the normative limit for swelling, making them unsuitable for humid environments. However, better performance was observed for fine particle boards and those incorporating AKD up to 2 hours of immersion.
