Inefficiency of the bus public transport system to meet users’ needs: optimizing the railway infrastructure and equipment in the Paraná Metropolitan Area

Abstract

Summary— It has been observed that in the metropolitan area of Paraná, which includes Oro Verde, Colonia Avellaneda, and San Benito, there is a significant need for effective public transport options. This area has a bus transport system and two railway lines. However, the railway system was closed and abandoned, and the existing services fail to meet user demand. The purpose of this project is to address the public transport system's inability to meet users' needs. The goal is to recondition the existing infrastructure and take advantage of its potential to complement the bus system. This work is organized as follows. First, the context and problematic of the transport system will be examined, focusing on the current situation in Paraná and its neighboring localities. Then, the problem will be defined through an identification of the deficiencies in the existing public transport system. Following this, the causes and consequences of this problem will be discussed. Finally, the implementation of an electric railway system will be addressed as a viable alternative solution. This work is intended to raise awareness about the need to improve the transport system in the region.

Resumen— Se ha observado que en el área metropolitana de Paraná, que incluye Oro Verde, Colonia Avellaneda y San Benito, existe una necesidad significativa de opciones efectivas de transporte público. Esta área cuenta con un sistema de transporte en autobús y dos líneas ferroviarias. Sin embargo, el sistema ferroviario fue cerrado y abandonado, y los servicios actuales no logran satisfacer la demanda de los usuarios. El propósito de este proyecto es abordar la incapacidad del sistema de transporte público para cubrir las necesidades de los usuarios. El objetivo es reacondicionar la infraestructura existente y aprovechar su potencial para complementar el sistema de autobuses. Este trabajo se organiza de la siguiente manera. Primero, se examinarán el contexto y la problemática del sistema de transporte, enfocándose en la situación actual de Paraná y sus localidades vecinas. Luego, se definirá el problema mediante la identificación de las deficiencias en el sistema de transporte público existente. A continuación, se discutirán las causas y consecuencias de este problema. Finalmente, se abordará la implementación de un sistema ferroviario eléctrico como una solución alternativa viable. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo crear conciencia sobre la necesidad de mejorar el sistema de transporte en la región.
