Abstract
This paper presents the results of a research project aimed at optimizing the design of a general model of a ship for the transport of livestock. Current ships, which usually sail with shallow draft, often round aground, harming the economic value of the cargo and the logistic cost. As a case study, a ship already in operation, with a traditional hull design and operates in the middle and lower delta area of the Paraná River-Argentina, has been taken. For two variants of the original design, the resistance to forward motion was calculated using the empirical prediction method of Holtrop and Mennen (1984) and compared with the results obtained through simulations in the computational fluid mechanics software. This analysis allowed us to observe not only how the modifications affect the resistance of the hull, but also the wave pattern and the generatedstreamlines.
