Abstract
Magnesium alloys are being studied for their use in bone prostheses, since they have excellent mechanical properties, biocompatibility, degradability and low cost compared to materials such as titanium. However, the use of these alloys is strongly limited by their high corrosion rate. In this work we present the compa- rative study of two different methodologies for the application of an anticorrosive SiO2 coating on AZ31 magnesium alloy that allows its use in prostheses. The evaluation of the corrosion rate was carried out by means of a comparative study of the polarization curves of the coated samples in order to evaluate the effect of the different techniques. Our study reveals an improvement in the corrosion resistance of the sam- ples coated by the plasma technique.
