Abstract
Sodium was incorporated into the mesoporous material SBA-15 using the wet impregnation method. In this way, solid catalysts of basic character were obtained, active in the transesterification reaction of sunflower oil with methanol for the production of biodiesel. The solids were characterized by low and high angle X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electronic transmission microscopy (TEM), and CO2 temperature-programmed desorption to determine the basicity of the impregnated solids. The transesterification reaction was carried out in a batch reactor under vigorous stirring, at 60°C and atmospheric pressure, using an excess of methanol to shift the equilibrium towards the formation of the desired product. The catalysts showed a high activity, obtaining yields of 38 to 94%.
