Abstract
The general formula of hydrotalcite (HT) may therefore be given as [Mg1-x Alx (OH)2]x+ [CO3 2- x/2 mH2O]x-. The thermal decomposition at temperatures above 450 °C produces MgAl mixed oxide with high surface area. “The Memory effect” is the reconstruction under mild conditions, of the original hydrotalcite structure when contacting the product of the thermal treatment with water solutions containing various anions. This property is widely used for the treatment of contaminated water. The HT was synthesized by coprecipitation, varying the Mg/Al molar ratio from 2 to 4.The oxides reconstructed the layered structure after adsorption of nitrate anions was observed, regardless of the Mg/Al molar ratio used. The largest nitrate removal was achieved with the sample of Mg / Al = 2, this showed the highest surface area and thermal stability.
