Abstract
This paper presents the results of a series of load tests, carried out with a foundation model supported by sand. The aim of this study is to measure the vertical stresses that within the soil when the loads are applied with the foundation. A circular foundation model was used and the sand was placed in a circular and rigid metallic tank, of 60 cm in diameter and 45 cm in height. The stresses were measured with diaphragm load cells. The effect of soil density on the vertical distribution of stresses in the sand was determined. The results showed that the inclusion of the cells in the soil mass produced an alteration in the stress-settlement behavior of the foundation.
