Abstract
The embankments are one of the main geotechnical structures. These structures are composed of layers of compacted local soil on the natural soil. Silty soils of aeolian origin (loess) are widely available to local soil in the plains and near mountain areas of the Cordoba Province. The inclusion of fine materials with reactive properties in the presence of water (cement), or coarse inert materials (sand), mixed and compacted with local silty soils, improves the mechanical properties. Furthermore, currently available synthetic materials such as fibers or geosynthetic that contributes to improve the properties of the composite. In this paper, we present a study of silty soil from Cordoba improvement by compaction, together with the addition of cement, and synthetic fiber. The experimental work includes CBR tests and unconfined compression. It is Presents a micro-scale analysis of the morphologies of particles through images of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results obtained lead to the conclusion on optimal mixture and compaction specifications suitable for the use of silty soils from Cordoba in compacted embankment works. The applications are aimed at use in construction of embankments in general, such as road base or raft foundation.
