Abstract
Stainless steels are a group of high alloy steels that have good resistance corrosion in different environments. This characteristic is due to their chromium content (greater than 10%), which allow forming an oxide film that isolates it from the aggressive environment, so these steels are used in the food, petrochemical, and medical industry. These steels can be subjected to plasma-assisted surface modification treatments in order to improve their surface properties. Plasma nitriding is a good technique to increase the surface hardness and wear resistance without affecting the corrosion resistance of the material. In this work, nitriding was carried out in different conditions, the influence of the variation of process time and temperature on the nitrided layer formation for AISI 420 martensitic stainless steel was studied. According to the results, it can be indicated that with treatments of short time and higher temperature, similar hardness and layer thickness values to the of traditional treatments can be obtained. With respect to the corrosion and wear resistance, some of the short nitriding treatments showed better behavior than the long treatments.
